Verbal Prescriptions - Sound Alike Drug Names
Background
Confusion caused by similar sounding drug names is common among many medications.
For generic drug names this may be due to the fact that many different drugs are "chemically-related" or are derivative compounds.
Since a generic drug name describes its chemical structure (at least in part), it should be unsurprising that, for example, there are at least 7 commercially available HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors that all end in "statin" or 6 proton pump inhibitors that end in "prazole."
Thus verbal prescriptions for sound-alike drugs have been a major source of prescription misfills and medication errors.
Remember - different voice accents and pronunciation can lead to miscommunication.
