CPOE

Patient: Hilda R. Morgan

Drug: Dobutamine

Order: Give 500 mg IV in D5W 250 mL. Infuse continuously at 1.4 mg/min

1. Touch and drag syringe slider to the correct volume of drug additive to use.

2. Select appropriate IV solution and volume to use.

3. Touch keypad and enter the appropriate infusion rate in mL/hr to use.

INSTUCTIONS

Click on a drug name, you will see the following:

a physician computerized order entry (CPOE) for an IV medication that has already been checked and verified by a pharmacist
the vial of medicine available for preparing the IV admixture
the syringe to use for preparing the IV admixture, and a syringe slide used for indicating the volume to withdraw
a IV infusion pump that needs to be programmed to administer the IV admixture in units of mL/hr

Step 1

Note: if the drug needs to be reconstituted, look up how to prepare the drug using the Administration section of Clinical Pharmacology Online
Note: drugs available in ADD-Vantage point-of-care vials do not need to be reconstituted separately (i.e. do not need to use syringe slider), but can only be used with ADD-Vantage IV solutions

Touch and drag syringe slider to the correct volume of drug additive to use (if applicable)

Touch keypad of the infusion pump and enter the appropriate infusion rate in mL/hr

Note: round values to nearest whole mL (e.g. 32.7 mL/hr would be rounded to 33 mL/hr)
Note: use ON/OFF button to clear answer
Note: remember to include the volume of drug additive ONLY if it exceeds 10% of the diluent volume

Example 1 - if adding 3 mL to a 50 mL bag (6%), do not account for additive volume, assume total volume is 50 mL
Example 2 - if adding 7 mL to a 50 mL bag (14%), account for additive volume, assume total volume is 57 mL

Step 5

Click the "Check Answers" button near the bottom of the page
There are separate grade boxes: 1) correct syringe volume, 2) correct IV solution and volume, and 3) correct infusion rate

Grade boxes will change from ungraded to either "CORRECT" or "ERROR"
Change answer and re-click Check Answers until all grade boxes display "CORRECT"
