Ceptic Online - IV Drug Administration Considerations

Background & Instructions:

Intravenous (IV) drug administration is MUCH more complicated than other dosage forms (e.g, oral, inhaled, topical, etc.)

The first objective of this activity is to learn about the following factors that impact IV drug administration:

  • methods for giving IV drugs
  • solution pH
  • solution osmolarity
  • vesicants
  • vascular access devices
  • use of in-line filters
  • types of infusion sets
  • drug sensitivity to light

While completing this activity, it is essential to read about each factor by clicking on the blue term (opens a popup window) or clicking on the terminology page.

The second objective is finding information about these factors for a specific drug using "Trissel's Monograph" which is located in the "Trissel's IV Compatibility" section of Lexidrug.

Trissel's Monograph should contain nearly all the information needed to complete the activity.

However, the standard Lexidrug monograph containing the dosing section may also need to be reviewed to determine the appropriate IV administration method (e.g., IV push, continuous/intermittent infusion) based on the dose and diagnosis for each drug.

Note: all drug doses are correct (i.e. no errors) based on the diagnosis provided.

Click the "VIEW" button for a drug to begin the activity. Tabs at the top of each page can be used to switch between pages.

After successfully entering all the required information for a drug, click the "Get Completion Code" button to obtain a code used for giving completion credit.

Note: making more than 5 errors while selecting the correct information for a drug will force the page to reset, requiring all information to be re-entered.
