  • Use the mortar method of preparation.
  • Base calculations on the preparation of 4% excess.

Procedure:

  1. Weigh g of calamine powder.
     
         
     
     
  2. Weigh g of zinc oxide powder.
     
         
     
     
  3. Measure mL olive oil (extra virgin) in a graduated conical.
     
         
     
     
  4. Measure mL of lime water (0.3% calcium hydroxide solution) in a graduated conical.
     
         
     
     
  5. Place both the calamine and zinc oxide into a large mortar. Using a pestle, combine powders until thoroughly mixed using the process of
     
     
  6. Add the in small portions to wet the solids. Continue adding and wetting the solids until the entire volume has been added and a thick slurry has been formed.
     
     
  7. Next, add the in portions, always mixing with extremely vigorous trituration.
     
     
  8. Due to the vigorous trituration, a will form itself, due to the production of the emulsifier calcium oleate.
     
     
  9. To allow room for shaking, pour the volume to dispense into a size dispensing bottle. Appropriately discard excess.
     
     
  10. Cap the bottle. Shake vigorously to ensure a final homogenous mixture.
     
     
  11. Label & Dispense.
