Alcohol, USP 90%
Purified Water, USP 6%
M & Ft. Topical Gel
Dispense: 4 ounces
Sig: apply to affected area on skin QID prn pain or itching

Procedure:

  1. Weigh g of benzocaine.
     
         
     
     
  2. Weigh g of carbopol 934 resin.
     
         
     
     
  3. Measure mL of alcohol (95%, USP) in a graduated conical.
     
         
     
     
  4. Measure mL of purified water (USP) in a graduated conical.
     
         
     
     
  5. Place all of the alcohol in an 8 ounce glass beaker and set it on a magnetic stirrer.
     
     
  6. Add a mangetic stir bar and turn on the stirring until it is spinning and a vortex has formed. Do not use any heat.
     
     
  7. Carfully add all of the benzocaine to the alcohol and allow it time to completely dissolve.
     
     
  8. Place a small handheld sifter over a weigh boat and add all of the carbopol to the sifter
     
     
  9. While continuing to stir the alcohol/benzocaine mixture, slowly sift the carbopol into the mixture at intervals. Allow the carbopol to disperse within the alcohol between additions.
     
     
  10. Add the purified water to the alcohol/benzocaine/carbopol mixture. Allow time to completely mix.
     
     
  11. Turn off stirring and remove the stir bar.
     
     
  12. Pour the volume to dispense into an appropriate dispensing container such as a squeeze bottle. Appropriately discard excess.
     
     
  13. Cap the bottle.
     
     
  14. Label & Dispense.
