Practice Compounding Prescription - Ointment

Menthol USP 0.25%
Isopropyl Alcohol as needed
Aquaphilic Ointment q.s.
Dispense: 4 ounces
Sig: apply TID PRN rash and itching

  • use 2 mL of isopropyl alcohol (density = 0.79 g/mL) to dissolve menthol
  • calculate for 10% excess

Procedure:

 
1. Weigh g of hydrocortisone.
 
     
 
 
2. Weigh g of menthol.
 
     
 
 
3. Measure mL of rubbing alcohol. This volume has a weight of g.
 
     
 
 
4. Weigh g of Aquaphilic Ointment.
 
     
 
 
5. Place all of the menthol into a glass mortar and add dissolve using the rubbing alcohol.
 
 
6. Place the hydrocortisone powder on the ointment paper and wet the powder using the dissolved menthol solution carefully transferred from the mortar.
 
 
7. Begin by adding a small amount of Aquaphilic Ointment to the hydrocortisone and mix thoroughly using a metal spatula and the process called
 
 
8. Next, continue to add increasing portions of Aquaphilic Ointment (mixing completely between steps) which is a technique called until all of the base has been incorporated.
 
 
9. Transfer the final product into a 4 ounce ointment jar.
 
 
10. Clean the outside of the ointment jar and the final product.
 
 
11. Label and Dispense.
